January Part 1: The Plan

New Year, Same Me- sharing what is supposed to be a Week One recap more than half way through the month. (Leopards and their pesky spots...) But, better late than never, so let's chat about the first room in our 12 Rooms in 12 Months blog series. You can read more about our motivation for this project here.

We decided to kick off our room refresh list with my home office. We chose this space as a starting point for several reasons. First, it is the first room you see when you enter our home, and we've done next to nothing to it since we moved into this house three years ago. It is furnished with pieces that we had on hand, without thought of the design or overall purpose of the room. It is the space I should be using to run my business, but generally end up working at our kitchen table (or from the couch!) as it has never functioned as well as I need it to. Next, because it has never functioned well, the office became the oversized closet we shoved things into when we didn't have a place for them. I'm hoping with this makeover, I'll finally have a finished space to work in, that I wouldn't dream of cluttering with things that do not belong. And finally, we knew that this room would probably eat up the biggest portion of our budget as I would be purchasing new furniture and other elements that won't be required of the other partially finished spaces in our home. Armed with a number of Christmas gift cards, I'll be able to stretch our budget a bit further to create the space I envisioned without sacrificing the look I truly want.

So, now that we've covered the why, it's time for the before photos:

Office BeforeHA! This is the cute Instagram version of my office. It stayed this way for all of two weeks. Here's what it looks like more often than not (I can't believe I'm sharing these!)

Office Before

The Workspace

When you enter through the French Doors, this area is the focal point of the room. While the furniture pieces that are in here currently are great pieces on their own, they were never the right scale for this small room. The hutch was too large and bulky for the space, and the narrow desk could not accommodate the orders I pack for the shop on any given day. The plan here is to create more functional storage and a larger work table to process and pack orders. I'll also be replacing the ceiling fan with an updated light fixture.

Office Bay Window

The Bay Window

This is where the junk gets piled. I will be turning this into a cozy sitting area where I can work on my laptop, read, or sip coffee in peace without the distractions of the main living areas of the house.

The Command Center

The current elements of this space will be integrated into the workspace, and this area of the room will be turned into functional storage for packing / shipping supplies. It won't be beautiful, but it will be organized!

The Feature Wall

This wall is visible from the front door when you enter our home. It is not at all welcoming or appealing in its current state. I have chosen to create a fun feature wall for this area of the room since it is highly visible.

The Plan

There are several new elements we'll be working on for this room-

-New Built-ins for workspace area

-New large worktable

-Peg board wall / shipping supplies storage

-Feature wall with wallpaper

-Sitting area

-Replace ceiling fan with new light fixture

I hope you'll continue to follow along as we kick-off our #nested12rooms12months Project. The office makeover is already underway, and off to a great start. In my next post, I'll be sharing more details about the products we chose to complete this space.

Until Next Time!
